Literature Circle III
For seven weeks, Upton Sinclair worked side-by-side with new immigrants in Chicago’s meatpacking district to research his groundbreaking book, The Jungle. Considered a cornerstone of Marxist literature, his searing exposé of the dismal conditions in factories and the horrors of the industry itself led Theodore Roosevelt to call him a muckraker, but eventually paved the way to the passage of The Meat Inspection Act and The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906.
Annotations will be checked and graded each meeting. Do not prepare a task before class, you will receive your assignment that day in class.

It is your responsibility to choose a novel, often from a list provided, and obtain that novel in a timely manner. You DO NOT have to purchase the book, you may borrow it from the Library. With that said, you will be required to annotate and complete four to five assignments based on your novel. Choose wisely!
